I have been a lifelong support of Arsenal and I will always be a Gunner, but for the majority of this season, I have wanted only one team to win the league, Liverpool.
Now, before you call me a turncoat or a fake supporter, hear me out. Arsenal have long been the team of "almost there" or bottling it when it matters most. The amount of times they have been near the top or at the top of the league, beating the rest of the Big 6, and then failing and losing games against weaker opposition, is almost ridiculous.
Arsene Wenger stuck to systems that just didn't work and didn't allow star players to shine. This obviously led to him stepping down and the reign of Unai Emery began. I have resigned myself to knowing the next season or two will be rebuilding phases, and that as long as Arsenal get into the Europa League, that will be an achievement.
On the other hand, my dad has supported Liverpool for as long as I can remember. The Luis Suarez phenom very quickly attracted me to Liverpool, and they sort of became my "second team", I would support them when Arsenal wasn't playing, but definitely wouldn't when they played the Gunners.
Liverpool then went a bit downhill (Brendan Rodgers, I'm looking at you) and they went off the radar a bit with the departure of Suarez and Coutinho. But now, the landscape of the Merseyside Giants has changed dramatically, and this team that was seen as disappointing, has turned into a monster a lot of teams are struggling to stop.
The team is packed with talent that could easily bolster any team in the world, Salah, Firmino, Mane, Wijnaldum, Allison, ALexander-Arnold, Gomes, Van Dijk, the list goes on. These aren't great players at Liverpool, they are some of the best on the planet.
Liverpool have always been known as the chokers, or the team that is in the Big 6, but just not good enough to compete with them. This has changed, this is not the case anymore, and what follows is why I want them to win.
Arsenal have been a team that people have felt could win the league, but then they slowly fade away in the last third of the season, with the predictable talk of "as long as we finish in the top 4" following closely behind.
They have had squads packed with talent, packed with goal scorers, goal stoppers, and big team killers, but haven't been able to turn that into a Premier League trophy win. They have been the constant underdogs, but underdogs that, if we're honest, have failed.
This is where Liverpool come in, the underdogs that can actually go the whole way, the team that has been similar to Arsenal in many ways, talent, progress, giant killers, but failing at the last hurdle. This is precisely why I want Liverpool to win, to do what every Arsenal supporter has wanted the Gunners to do for years, actually win the league.
Now, I know my logic can apply to other teams, and I know that Manchester City are a dominant force that is near impossible to stop, but put quite simply, Liverpool deserve it. Liverpool deserves the trophy, the praise, the accolades, the recognition. They deserve to be the champions of England.
This is going to be hard for the City and Man United supporters to read (I don't care too much about Spurs cause yeah, Arsenal are the Kings of North London so sit down) but I truly believe that Liverpool deserve this, and if you look deep enough into your heart, I bet you wouldn't mind seeing them lift the trophy, irrelevant of who you support.
To conclude, I really hope that the rest of Liverpools season goes perfectly. I really hope that they continue their winning ways and that on the last day of the season, I can sit back and watch the trophy that they, without any doubt, deserve to lift.
